THE BEST AND THE WORST

Which of these iguanas does your iguana resemble? With hard work and proper care, you can raise a healthy,
long-living iguana that looks like Dracul and not one that starts out like little Iggy (below).

Iguana Perfection:
Dracul

Dracul is a three and a half year old Green Iguana, five and a half feet long with a SVL (snout to vent length) of eighteen inches. He belongs to Judith of Simi Valley and is the poster boy for what a healthy adult male iguana should look like. Congratulations to Judith for raising such a healthy and
handsome guy!

Does Your Iguana Look Like This?

This iguana is suffering from metabolic bone disease or nutritional secondary hyperparathyrodism. If your iguana is showing signs of MBD or NSHP, you must get it to a reptile vet immediately. You must change it's diet to one high in calcium and low in phosphorus, make sure your iguana gets frequent sun exposure, and has a fluorescent UV tube light in it's enclosure. See Nutrition Requirements. Remember that just adding powdered vitamins to an all ready improper diet will not help. If your iguana's jaws seem to be swollen or some parts of his body seem bony and others fat, he or she may be in the critical stage of MBD or NSHP. Your iguana is trying to replace the needed calcium by taking it directly from the only natural source of calcium it has...it's own bones. This leads to brittle bones that fracture easily, deformities, and other life-threatening conditions.
